Whether you have children yourself, or live with any non-smokers you should be conscience of other peoples health. It is not only your health you are jeopardizing, it is everybody around you also. Every time you exhale the smoke or even just the smoke from a lit cigarette the people around you are inhaling it. They have no choice in the matter unlike you.

Thousands of people each year die from secondhand smoke from heart disease and lung cancer. Babies and children that live with smokers have more bronchitis, ear infections, colds, allergies, and asthma. Some non-smokers that are around the secondhand smoke suffer from headaches, dizziness, and eye irritation. Pregnant woman have a higher chance of having a baby with low birth weight. Even more staggering is that sudden infant death syndrome, also known as SIDS, is linked to smoking.

The risks that non-smokers take are chosen for them. If you stop smoking you will no longer be putting the health of others with the second-hand smoke in you hands. If you have children for instance, you will feel better by not smoking and letting them inhale the dangerous chemicals that is in tobacco smoke.

When it comes to learning how to lose weight, being realistic is always the first step. You need to realize that it is something that is going to take a lot of hard work and dedication. You may find times when you want to give up or stop caring. These are the times that you need to work even harder. Remember that it is always worth it. Looking and feeling your best are always worth the hardships of diet and exercise.

If exercise is not something that you wish to do then you can lose weight without exercise. You just need to keep in mind that if you do not wish to exercise but want to lose weight diet is your one of your only other options. Types Of Skin Cancer

More than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed in United States annually. Isn’t this a scary figure? Though scary, it is a fact and it means that 1 in 5 Americans will catch some type of skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. Skin cancer maybe one of the commonest forms of cancer but it is also one of the most preventable forms. The major risk factor behind all types of skin cancer is exposure to ultra-violet radiations. Prevent this cause and you may be able to avoid skin cancer.

Types of skin cancerThere are basically three types of skin cancer. They are as follows:

1. Basal cell carcinoma: this is the commonest types of skin cancer that develops in the deepest layer of epidermis. Though these cancers almost never spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body, they deeply invade the surrounding tissue.

Etiological factors: Exposure to sun is the most potent causative factor behind basal cell carcinoma. There are however certain risk factors that aggravate the effects of sun exposure for occurrence of cancer. The risk factors are:

* Fair skin- the blondes are more affected
* Advancing age- even those people who have had average ultra-violet rays’ exposure like during vacations in early years of life are at risk of developing basal cell carcinoma as they grow older. Therefore, despite the fact that skin cancer may only be experienced after 50 years of age, preventive care should start from childhood.
* Dwelling: In United States, people living in certain areas are more susceptible to skin cancers. For example, those living in Texas are at high risk due to the increased strength of sun there.
* Tanning Booths: Despite being a popular leisure activity for many youths across the world, tanning booths are said to result in more skin cancers due to heavy UV exposure.

Signs and diagnosis: A biopsy of the affected area that may just look like a pearly white swelling is necessary for an accurate diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma. The area is usually covered by blood vessels known as telangiectasia. Some cancer nodes may look shiny and other dark due to melanin pigmentation. The basal cell carcinoma grows very slowly often on the back or chest and may not be diagnosed accurately unless a biopsy is done.

Treatment: As this type of skin cancer rarely spreads much, the prognosis of any type of treatment is usually good. The doctors may perform simple surgical excision or may opt for chemotherapy and radiation. If it is very much localized and small, curettage and desiccation can be done preferably by dermatologists. Some doctors opt for medicinal creams and agents that attack localized cancer cells and yield good results aesthetically. Efudex and Pluroflex are popular creams used locally for basal cell carcinoma.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma: the squamous cells line the tissue forming surface of the skin, the hollow organs of the body, and respiratory and digestive tracts. The squamous cell carcinoma begins in these thin and flat cells.

The risk factors: Even more than in basal cell carcinoma, sun exposure plays a significant role in developing squamous cell carcinoma. As in the earlier type, light skin and increasing age are additional risk factors. It has been observed that women or men whose hair cover their ears develop this type of cancer much less frequently than those with exposed ears.

Apart from sun exposure, exposure to x-rays, heat, hydrocarbons, and arsenic may result in squamous cell carcinoma. Immuno-compromised individuals like HIV positive people may develop such cancers much more easily, as might those infected with human papilloma virus (HPV).

There are different forms of squamous cell carcinoma:

* Actinic (solar) keratoses: it is the earliest form of squamous cell carcinoma. The scalp, face, hands, and ears are more affected than other parts of the body. Their appearance is like red rough bumps on a sun-damaged skin. On the surface, it may look small, but may have invaded deeply and will give rise to excruciating pain to the sufferer.
* Keratocanthoma: this is a rapidly growing squamous cell carcinoma, which forms a mound with a crater in the center.
* Bowen’s disease: it is the most superficial scaly patch on the trunk or the extremities due to sun exposure
* Actinic cheilitis: red lips and blistered appearance may be actinic cheilitis, in which the cancer is not deep
* Bowenoid papulosis: these are just like genital warts and are pretty superficial

Earlier diagnosis important:

Unlike basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinomas may metastasize to other body parts or organs. Therefore, early diagnosis in case of squamous cell carcinoma is extremely important to prevent widespread damage. Usually a punch biopsy of the affected region is sufficient to diagnose the cancer.

Treatment: The treatment of squamous cell carcinoma is similar to that of basal cell carcinoma.

3. Melanoma: This is the most dangerous form of skin cancers but it rarely occurs without prior warning signs.. If diagnosed and treated early, the prognosis of melanoma is very good but if metastasis occurs to distant organs, the cancer may prove fatal. When the melanocytes (pigment cells) in the skin become malignant, melanoma is formed. Cutaneous melanoma, ocular or intra-ocular melanoma are some of its types.

Risk factors of melanoma:

Even though melanoma usually occurs mostly in the elderly population, no age group is totally risk free. Head, neck, and trunk are the commonest areas where melanoma occurs. In women, lower legs are the areas affected mostly by melanoma. Fair skinned persons are again at more risk of developing melanoma than dark-skinned people. Through lymphatic system, the melanoma may spread to other organs and it is then termed as metastatic melanoma. Dysplastic nevi (abnormal moles), ordinary moles, and freckles can also turn into melanoma in some people. Therefore, the person who has big numbers of moles is at a higher risk of developing melanoma. Severe sunburns and reduced immunity due to HIV infection are also some of the other risk factors.

Diagnosis: though a doctor may diagnose melanoma clinically, a biopsy is a must for definitive diagnosis. After the diagnosis is confirmed, appropriate staging of melanoma is done to identify the stage at which the cancer is presently growing This is dependent upon the area of invasion. This helps in sketching the perfect treatment plan.

Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy, biological therapy, and/or radiation are usually the preferred modes of treating melanoma. The early the melanoma is diagnosed and treated, the better is the result.

If you are not a senior, or you are not disabled, you have probably given very little thought to Medicare and Medicaid. You have probably just always assumed that the coverage would be there for you when you need it. And because it is government coverage, you probably always thought you would be well taken care of. But here is something you need to know: when you need Medicare and Medicaid, be prepared for them to let you down.

All disabled and senior citizens face common problems with Medicaid and Medicare: the insurance does not cover what they need. This is a real problem for a growing number of Americans.

As a person with disabilities and diabetes, I am covered under both Medicare and Medicaid. Because of myHow Medicaid and Medicare Let Down the People Who Need Them Most chronic health conditions (diabetes), I need routine care and consistency of treatment. Without this, I cannot maintain my health, let alone hope for any improvement.

I have seen times when a single medicine is changed month after month after month because my pharmacist has to give me whatever my insurance has approved that month. There’s no such thing as “my doctor says this is what I need, so I get this” when it comes to these insurance companies. You either get what they have on their pre-approved list, or your doctor has to go through a lengthy pre-authorization quest. Meanwhile, what are you supposed to do? The blunt truth is that not all generics work as well as brand name medicines for every person.

Sometimes you really do need something specific. And even if you are able to use a generic, shouldn’t you at least be able to count on getting the same generic on a consistent basis? That doesn’t even begin to address the issue of co-payments that keep going up and up and up.

This is not just my take on things. I have talked to a number of senior and disabled persons to find out that they are having the same problems and frustrations. Sometimes we just get so disgusted fighting with our insurance that we want to give up and say, “Enough is enough.”

I think because the government runs both Medicare and Medicaid, that we would all be better off if they merged into a single organization. I think that would help them provide better coverage and would end in fewer conflicts. Because seniors and disabled persons have limited income, they should also provide 100% coverage for the medications and expenses that are needed.

When The Time Isn’t Right: Preventing Pregnancy

For a healthy, sexually active woman with normal periods of fertility, the chances of becoming pregnant are quite high. But there are times when a healthy, sexually active woman does not wish to become pregnant. At these times, a woman may choose to actively prevent pregnancy using birth control.

When The Time Isn't Right: Preventing PregnancyThe first question a woman has to ask herself about pregnancy is if there will be a right time in the future. For some women the answer may be that the time will be right in a few months, or a few years. Other women may have made the decision for any number of reasons that pregnancy has no place in their future at any time. An examination of this question, together with discussions with her partner when appropriate, can help a woman make her birth control choice.

Birth control has almost as many names as there are methods, family planning, contraception, pregnancy prevention, and fertility control, to name a few. Essentially all birth control methods are the same at their core level: they prevent a woman’s egg from becoming fertilized by a man’s sperm. Some birth control methods are an ideal choice for the “not now” answer to pregnancy, while there are a few methods that are only suited to the “not ever” answer. These methods are reversible, and permanent, respectively. A reversible method does not permanently affect fertility, and can be stopped any time a woman desires to try to conceive. A permanent method is just what the name implies: it usually is non-reversible and generally fertility removed by these methods cannot be restored.

There are several times of reversible birth control methods: barrier methods (condoms, for example), hormonal methods (birth control pills), mechanical methods (IUDs), and natural methods (rhythm methods, for example). It is important to note that most forms of birth control do not protect against diseases which are transmitted by sexual activity; that concern must be addressed separately. Permanent Surgical Sterilization

Permanent methods of birth control are revered to as sterilization. Men who are certain they do not wish to father children have the option of choosing a vasectomy. A vasectomy involves the surgical closing of the spermatic duct through which sperm travels out of the man’s body during orgasm; this is done by cutting the duct and closing each of the resulting ends of the vessel. This surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia by a urologist or specialty surgeon. After a vasectomy has been performed, a man’s sperm do not exit his penis during orgasm, and therefore he cannot fertilize the woman’s egg. A vasectomy does not affect a man’s ability to achieve an erection, perform sexually, and it does not noticeably affect his semen except on a microscopic level.

Permanent surgical sterilization for women generally takes the form of tubal ligation. In this method, a woman receives general anesthesia. The surgeon then identifies the Fallopian tubes (the vessel in which the eggs travel from the woman’s ovaries to her uterus) and closes it by clipping or cutting it, and then tying, cauterizing or otherwise sealing the ends. This is often done as an outpatient procedure and typically takes from one-half hour to 45 minutes. Tubal ligation carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and the other risks related to receiving general anesthesia. However, it has a high rate of pregnancy prevention (98%) and is more likely to be successfully reversed than a vasectomy.

Mechanical Methods: Intrauterine Devices

Intrauterine devices, or IUDs are a type of birth control classified as mechanical, though the exact method in which they work is not fully understood. It is though that the presence of an IUD in a woman’s uterus causes a brief inflammation response localized to the uterus, while also affecting cervical mucus in a way that inhibits the passage of sperm into the uterus. An IUD is a small “T” shaped polyethylene plastic device that is inserted into the uterus. A small string protrudes through the cervix into the vaginal canal; this helps the woman and doctor know when the device is properly inserted and allows the woman to verify that it has not been expelled from the body. Some IUDs are made of and emit small amounts of copper, while some release small amounts of the hormone progesterone to further help prevent pregnancy.

Hormonal birth control, such as the oral contraceptive pill, are one of the most popular forms of contraception. Hormonal forms of birth control include oral pills, injectables, the contraceptive patch, the vaginal ring, etc. All are based on delivering hormones into a woman’s body. Birth control pills may contain one or more synthetic hormones and are typically called combination or mini pills. Side effects of using hormonal methods of birth control include breast tenderness, nausea while the body is adapting to the hormonal changes, vaginal bleeding, etc.

Natural methods of preventing pregnancy rely not on surgery, medication, or other devices, but rather instead on knowing how a woman’s body works and timing sexual activity for a time when fertilization is very unlikely to occur. Natural methods are safe methods in that they are free from the side effects possible with surgery and drugs. However, they must be followed stringently to be reliable. All methods involve determining when a woman is fertile. The Calendar method uses a calendar to track a woman’s menstrual cycle to make this determination. Birth Control Methods: Something For Every Couple

Barrier methods are the use of a physical barrier to prevent sperm and egg from joining, such as condoms or diaphragms. The IUD, or intrauterine device, is a form of mechanical birth control. IUDs are small devices inserted into the uterus of a woman by her healthcare provider.

Hormonal birth control methods release hormones into the woman’s body which prevent an egg from developing and maturing. The most common form of hormonal birth control is the birth control pill, also known as oral contraceptives. Birth control pills may contain one or more hormones, and are known respectively as mini pills or combination pills. Both are effective provided they are taken according to directions. Other forms of hormonal birth control deliver the hormones using different delivery systems, such as the contraceptive patch, a vaginal ring, or birth control implants or injections.

Natural methods of birth control involve understanding the woman’s physiology to determine when sexual intercourse may be enjoyed with minimal risk of fertilization. Because they involve no surgery, no chemicals or medications, and produce no side effects, natural methods are favored by many couples. However, natural methods must be performed with great consistency and care, as one act of intercourse outside “allowed” times may result in a pregnancy.

It is important to remember that there is no form of birth control which provides absolute protection against sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. Though some barrier methods do offer limited protection, only strict abstinence can assure that you will remain free from STDs.
